Picture Identification for Early Language Learners is an educational app created by a Speech Language Pathologist to help children develop their vocabulary skills for common toys, clothing and foods. It is designed for children who are in the early stages of language development as well as those with special needs, such as language delays and autism.

Children are presented with 24 colorful photos of toys, clothing and foods. Two or three images are displayed on the screen at a time and the child is prompted to identify an object by touching it. After each correct response, the object is labeled and its picture moves across the screen. The child has two opportunities to select the correct object. If two incorrect responses are given, the correct item will automatically move across the screen and be labeled. The next pair or group of objects will then be displayed. After eight objects have been identified, a short video clip is shown as a reward or reinforcer. Opportunities for multiple practice sessions are built into the program.

To eliminate distraction, verbal praise or reinforcement is not provided but left to the individual parent or teacher who knows his or her child best.

To begin the program, choose one of the categories by tapping on that image. (Note that categories displaying three images on the screen will be more challenging than two images.) The child then listens to the verbal prompt and follows the directions.

* It is recommended that you use Apple’s guided access feature on the iPad with children who are easily distracted or who have motor difficulties. This will enable you to lock the app and prevent exiting to the Home screen.
